As a more affordable PSU, linear power supplies work particularly well with products such as amplifiers. This is because AC/AC power supplies possess a low operating frequency, producing optimal noise and ripple performance. However, the size and weight of linear power solutions increase in line with the power they produce, resulting in limitations on the output power.

The technology used in linear PSUs is rarely as efficient as its switch-mode counterparts. At Ideal Power, we provide AC/AC power supplies ranging from 6 watts to 40 watts, with a proportion of units conforming to the latest ERP Efficiency standards. This means you can maximise the power output whilst retaining the noise and ripple performance.

Switch-mode power supply units are smaller, lighter, and more efficient than their linear counterparts, but the noise and ripple performance is challenging. AC/DC power supplies often produce variable frequencies rather than the static frequencies linear PSUs work at. They can be manipulated to operate at a fixed frequency, but these models are specially manufactured for audio applications. There is a lot of scope for audio PSUs within this range.
