MEDICAL POWER SUPPLY UNITS AND PARTS CLASSIFICATIONS

Any piece of electronic medical equipment that interacts with a patient is called an applied part. These applied parts are classified under one of the following categories: ‘Type B’, body type, ‘Type BF’, body floating type, ‘Type CF’, and cardiac floating type. Each type has varying input to output isolation voltages, input to ground isolations, and output to ground isolations. Similarly, there is variation in the earth leakage current, enclosure leakage current, and patient leakage current. 

Each applied part is manufactured for a designated purpose and such a vital sector means that they need to be accurately selected and used.

Type B PSU 4000V AC 1500V AC 500V AC These are grounded devices that work within 6 feet of the patient vicinity and do not require electrical contact; examples include lighting, hospital beds, automated medication dispensers and X-ray machines or scanners.
Type BF PSU 4000V AC 1500V AC 1500V AC These devices have conductive contact with the patient; examples include incubators, blood pressure monitors and electrosurgical devices.
Type CF PSU 4000V AC 1500V AC 1500V AC This is the most stringent classification and refers to devices that heart; examples include intracardiac ECG electrodes, defibrillators, or external pacemakers.

CHANGES TO EMC TESTING

EMC testing now has more complex risk assessments and new immunity test levels. This is due to modern technological advances that can ensure greater safety.

MEANS OF PROTECTION

Means of Protection (MOP) is a classification that is put in place to protect patients and operators alike from electric shocks. This is an essential consideration when selecting the right power supply for medical purposes as safety is at the forefront of your execution. INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION

International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the commission that’s responsible for establishing and publishing the ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements. These requirements take multiple environments and electrical devices into account to ensure complete safety.

Furthermore, they risk assess electromagnetic disturbances and the effects of such that are caused by other electronic devices within the intended environment. As well as varying environments, differing uses are considered, categorising devices using their intended medical purpose (intended use) and their standby, transport, and maintenance (normal use).
