How Ideal Power can combat the Ventilator Shortage

COVID-19 is straining the UK Health care system, and one piece of lifesaving medical equipment that is in desperate shortage is mechanical ventilators.

What does a Ventilator do?

Covid-19 affects the respiratory system, meaning that patients with extreme conditions experience problems with breathing. A ventilator helps patients who cannot properly breathe on their own by pumping air into their lungs through a tube that has been inserted into their windpipes.

On the 25th  March 2020, Chief Medical Officer at the Lung Association Dr.Albert Rizzo spoke with NBC News and advised that he “fears that we will soon run out of mechanical ventilators”.

Dr Albert Rizzo also went on to say; “This is a disease that people are dying of because of respiratory illness. They’re not dying because their heart fails. They’re not dying of shock,” Rizzo said. “They’re dying because they just can’t get oxygen to their bloodstream, and that makes other organs fail, as well.”

What is the UK Government doing to combat the shortage of ventilators?

Due to the shortage of ventilators; on the 20th March 2020, the Department of Health and Social Care released Ventilator system specifications to assist Manufacturers and Designers. The government is looking for businesses who can support the supply of ventilators and ventilator components across the UK as part of a response to combat coronavirus (COVID-19).
