Common Compulsory Standards

Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

UL is a certification & test organisation who work on a global basis.

Like many certification organisations, UL produces standards, directives or procedures with the hope of having them introduced through government agencies as compulsory standards that must be met.

Below are a few standards approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which are compulsory for electronic products with power supplies manufactured and distributed in the USA.

  • UL 60950-1- Information Technology Standard
  • UL 60601-1 – Medical Standard
  • UL 60065 – Audio, Video and Media Electronics Standard
  • UL 60335-1 – Electrical Household Items Standard

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Mark (US)

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is a safety consulting and certification company headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois. It maintains offices in 46 countries. UL was established in 1894 and has participated in the safety analysis of many of the last century’s new technologies, most notably the public adoption of electricity and the drafting of safety standards for electrical devices and components.

The North American UL mark is a voluntary certification which demonstrates a product has met UL’s own safety requirements.

FCC - certification and standards USA

FCC Deceleration of Conformity

FCC Certification was introduced in 1998 by the Federal Communications Commission with the objective of reducing electromagnetic interference. Although a US standard the standard is recognised and used worldwide.

UR MARK - Certificaions and Standards USA

UR Mark

The Component Recognition Mark (UR) is UL’s second voluntary component mark, this means that although it has UL recognition, when under this program the component is believed to be not yet complete and will be later installed in to another device. The components therefore are not for field installation and should only be done so in a factory.

Ideal Power - CB Scheme | Certification & Standards in US

CB Certification

Originally operated by the CEE (former European “International Commission for Conformity Testing of Electrical Equipment”), the scheme was integrated into the IEC System for Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE) in 1985.

The CB scheme is an international agreement among participating countries and certification organizations, which aims to facilitate trade by promoting harmonising national standards with a body of international standards.

DoE Level VI | Certifications & Standards US

DoE & CEC Level VI Energy Efficiency

In 2014 California Energy Commission (CEC) announced legalisation for Level VI Efficiency would be introduced. The legalisation was enforced by the Department of Energy (DoE) in February 2016. The standard bought in tighter regulations in ensuring External Power Supplies (EPS) met satisfactory efficiency levels, as demonstrated by the table below.

Ideal Power - CB Scheme | Certification & Standards in Canada

CB Certification

The CB scheme is an international agreement among participating countries and certification organizations, which aims to facilitate trade by promoting harmonising national standards with a body of international standards.

This results in prescribed IEC standards which are equal to standards found in different parts of the world. A good example of this is IEC 60950-1, which seeks to harmonise with global standards, such as, UL 60950-1, EN 60950-1 or BS 60950-1 to name a few.
